FAQ - How to become a SmartCoach

I think I would enjoy coaching very much, but given my current commitment, can I coach on a part-time basis only?

Absolutely! In most cases, SmartCoach is a part-time endeavor. Our coaches generally coach one or two sessions per day, two or three days a week. This can vary, of course, depending on the size of your client base.

If you are looking to engage in a meaningful and financially rewarding endeavor, being a SmartCoach could be the type of engagement you have been looking for.

Do note, however, that coaching on less than full time basis does not mean that the professional standard we expect from our coaches would be undermined. Nothing could be further from the truth. We expect our coaches to be highly competent, regardless of whether one intends to coach full or part time.    back to top

If I work on a part-time basis only, is it possible to make a sufficient income?

Yes, even though only you would know what that sufficient amount of income is. It is worth noting that our coaching program is not conducted on a one-on-one basis, which limits revenue potential based on availability of coachable hours. Instead, our sessions are group-based, so a coach’s earning is linked directly to the number of students being coached per session rather than the number of coaching hours.

In addition, our coaches utilize a NASA–inspired, attention-enhancing technology, called Play Attention System to generate additional revenue. This tool enables our coaches to be uniquely differentiated and vastly expands income opportunities. Please see videos on Play Attention system.

It is estimated that 3% to 7% of children in the U.S. suffer from AD/HD or like-kind symptoms. This means there is at least one or two students with AD/HD in every classroom in the U.S. public schools! This is a huge market to be serviced, and vastly untapped still with highly beneficial programs such as SmartCoach. Given this industry scenario, some of our coaches run more than one location, thereby greatly enhancing the income potential. Yes, given the demand factor of the market, it seems SmartCoach is a business with backwind propelling it forward, providing the participants with an opportunity for outsized reward.

Can you tell me more on how I can generate additional revenue with Play Attention?

When you register to undertake SmartCoach training to become our coach, we will teach you as to which markets to pursue and how you can utilize the Play Attention system to help children or adults with attention deficit issues. Play Attention is an educational (not medical) tool designed to improve one’s concentration and ability to sustain an attentive state. This is vital to children’s academic performance and behavior (also athletes, certain professions or special learning situations). Given this fact, return on investment on Play Attention is a no brainer, as attention is a fundamental quality to everything people do. Simply put, with the Play Attention system, a child who can’t finish a 30-minute homework assignment within 30 minutes is a potential prospect for SmartCoach business, giving you a huge, untapped market base.

In addition, when you become a certified SmartCoach and integrate Play Attention in your coaching business, you can qualify to become a SmartCoach Play Attention dealer to generate additional revenues by distributing the system to various institutions and entities where attention is the critical raw material to success, e.g., schools, athletic clubs, etc. We also provide a home version system to our dealers so that these institutions and entities can sell it to their captive customer base, tremendously enhancing your income potential, not to mention the exposure you gain in the community as a specialist coach offering unique solutions.

What is the relationship between the SmartCoach organization and its coach?

Unless otherwise explicitly stated, our coaches are independent operators or contractors who utilize SmartCoach curriculum and business methods. An individual who is a certified SmartCoach is free to operate his/her business as he or she sees fit as long as the basic principles and guidelines prescribed are strictly adhered.    back to top

What is the difference between SmartCoach and ICF coaches who offer life-strategy, executive, family, sports, and/or other coaching service?

Being a certified SmartCoach does not qualify the person to be a personal life-strategy coach or any other type of coach certified by organizations such as International Coach Federation (ICF). That is a totally different track.

ICF or other life coaches offer more broadly defined services and take a generalist approach, i.e., one’s coaching business could encompass working with individuals wanting to lose weight to teaching parenting techniques to helping executive performance.

At SmartCoach, we prefer to remain as specialists since a prospect’s mind thinks that the specialist is superior to the generalist. A coach trained by our organization is being trained specifically to establish and operate an independent SmartCoach operation to coach children confronted with AD/HD or others with challenges in social, academic, or family setting.

In addition, unlike ICF or other life coaches, all our coaches utilize the Play Attention system which enables them to serve as specialists in educational, sports, or professional markets where sustaining focus is important to performance. The integration of this system uniquely differentiates our coaches from general life-strategy coaches and provides them with competitive advantage in attracting new clients. Given that attention is critical to successful performance in many endeavors, the market application for the Play Attention system is limited only by our coach’s imagination.   back to top

What is the advantage of becoming a SmartCoach compared to those certified by ICF or like-kind entities?

Becoming a SmartCoach is a personal decision, but there are basic factors to consider:

1.Training time and cost required - ICF or similar life-strategy coach training takes much longer, costs many times more, and requires full time coaching commitment afterwards to succeed. In addition, most of these coaching programs require coach prospects to be personally coached by an ICF-certified coach to “experience coaching” before undertaking any ICF-approved coach training – this is an additional time and cost factor to consider. It could take more than 2 years before one can become certified.

2.Starting a coaching business after certification - Once you become an ICF-certified or similar life-strategy coach (a generalist), you are on your own in establishing a coaching practice which most likely utilizes your past work experience and newly learned coaching skills. This means you will have to develop your own coaching content, marketing plan, business system, just to mention a few – essentially, you are starting a new business. For some, this undertaking could be exciting. For many, it could be daunting – especially for those without prior business background, counseling type of experience, or desiring part-time involvement only.

3.Market and specialist - It may be informative for a coach prospect to know that there are millions of children in the U.S. alone suffering from AD/HD symptoms. The SmartCoach program uniquely addresses AD/HD symptoms. As such, your skill sets obtained from our training are very valuable and specific to AD/HD children and their parents. In short, when you become a SmartCoach, you are trained to be a specialist with focus on AD/HD children and others with like-kind symptoms.

From a marketing perspective, being a specialist has its advantage, as people with specific problems seek specialists, and not generalists, for solutions, e.g., one seeks a heart surgeon, not general practitioner, for heart problems. To enable our coaches to effectively service this captive market, SmartCoach has developed its own content which is easy to implement, in addition to providing a unique computer-based Attention Enhancing system to expand business opportunities.

How much training is required to become a SmartCoach?

SmartCoach curriculum is unique, yet easy to master for any person. Absolutely no prior coaching experience is necessary, except your desire to learn and commitment to training. Basic understanding of AD/HD and its symptoms can be extremely helpful, although these topics will be covered in the training.

If you apply yourself, you can complete our online training within 4 to 6 weeks.

Generally speaking, after 4 to 6 weeks of continuous training via online, practically everyone gains sufficient understanding of AD/HD and the SmartCoach curriculum for implementation, in addition to the application of the unique Play Attention system.   back to top

What major topic areas are covered in your training program?

Our training materials encompass the following general areas:
Study of AD/HD;
Business matters;
Coaching and Teaching;
SmartCoach Curriculum;
and overview of Play Attention System.   back to top

Why is SmartCoach program duration shorter than ICF or other training programs before certifying someone to start coaching?

First of all, our training content is intensely focused on AD/HD and easy to learn. We teach only the essentials, so our trainees will be equipped with sufficient understanding of coaching AD/HD at the end of the training session. ICF or other life-coaching programs encompass more personal, conceptual, and/or procedural matters which necessitate longer training.

Secondly, longer training does not necessarily produce superior certifications or better coaches. As long as the basic and relevant materials are learned, a coach who implements our structured curriculum, regardless of the length of the training compared to others, will certainly help a child with AD/HD. After all, that’s what matters the most.

Helping children with AD/HD requires both competence and commitment from the coach. At SmartCoach, we believe these two essential factors are best comprehended, illuminated and enhanced from a coach’s hands-on experience, i.e., actually coaching the children rather than theorizing in the classroom. Given our structured curriculum, we believe 3-4 weeks of intensive training is sufficient for coaches to become certified and start their journey of transforming children with AD/HD. To us, the learning process is a journey; as long as one’s passion for coaching remains, the competence and commitment factors will naturally deepen. We trust this premise, and verify it via annual recertification.   back to top

How does SmartCoach ensure the continuing quality of its coaches?

All coaches must complete the SmartCoach’s annual online certification training requirements to maintain their active status. With each successful completion of these certifications, our coaches are designated with different color levels to indicate the level of their competence and experience – very similar to belt ranking in martial arts.   back to top
